About the Role

We are excited to offer an opportunity for an experienced Ornithologist or Ecologist with a bird specialism to join an established yet fast-growing consultancy in Bristol. While we are particularly interested in attracting an ecologist with expertise in birds, we also seek candidates with a broad skill set, including generalist survey capabilities, project management, and report writing (EcIA and others). Our client's professional approach combines expertise with a friendly and approachable manner, ensuring we deliver the best possible results for their clients by leveraging the collective experience of the entire team.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of consultancy experience, including report writing and project management, not just ECoW or surveys.
  • Proficient in bird survey techniques and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, including report writing and client liaison.
  • Thorough understanding of wildlife legislation and the planning system, with the ability to provide technical advice to clients confidently.
  • Comprehensive survey skills, including habitats and protected species surveys.
  • Membership in CIEEM.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Client-focused approach, with an understanding and appreciation of the commercial aspects of projects.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate seasonality and survey time constraints.
  • Full driving license.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Strong experience in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
  • Protected species survey licences (bat licence preferred).
  • Full membership with CIEEM.
  • Experience in writing Environmental Statement (ES) chapters and/or Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs).
  • Experience in writing European Protected Species Licence (EPSL) applications, preferably held in your name.
  • Proficiency in QGIS.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with your grade and experience.
  • Fun and friendly, non-corporate working environment.
  • Extensive CPD opportunities.
  • Paid leave for volunteering with a charity.
  • Company social events.
  • Your birthday off work.
  • Contributory pension scheme.
  • Time off in lieu (TOIL) accrued throughout the year.
  • Flexible home working options and hours.
  • Increasing annual leave with length of service.
  • Option to purchase additional leave.
  • Paid professional memberships.

If you are a skilled ecologist with a passion for birds and a broad range of ecological expertise, we would love to hear from you!
