About the Role
Our client is seeking a Lead Ecological Advisor and Mentor to join their motivated and growing ecology team. This is a newly established role designed to support the team in delivering high-quality ecological consultancy services. Responsibilities include reviewing team reports, mentoring junior staff, preparing fee quotations, engaging with clients, and spearheading innovative approaches within the consultancy.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Principal Ecologist who brings a deep understanding of ecological consultancy, a dedication to maintaining high standards, and a passion for mentoring the next generation of professionals in the field. You will play a critical role in ensuring project success, fostering professional development, and advancing ecological practices within the company.
This role is primarily home-based, with occasional visits to the office in Hertfordshire (4-6 times per year). Candidates should have substantial experience in ecological consultancy, particularly in habitat assessments, protected species surveys, and Biodiversity Net Gain.

The ecology team handles a broad spectrum of projects, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Protected Species Surveys (especially bats), Mitigation Schemes, Ecological Enhancement Plans, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments, and more. The team also collaborates closely with Arboricultural and Landscape consultants, as well as specialist ecological sub-contractors.
Requirements
- A minimum of 6 years’ experience in ecological consultancy, with at least 3 years at the Principal Ecologist level, including leadership or advisory roles
- Proficiency in Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Protected Species Surveys, and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
- Experience in preparing fee quotes for a variety of services
- Strong client liaison skills
- Comprehensive understanding of wildlife legislation and the planning system
- Excellent knowledge of UK flora and fauna
- Strong report writing and review skills, with meticulous attention to detail
Highly Desirable
- Advanced expertise in one or more ecological specialisms
- Experience in managing and mentoring staff
- Bat Survey Licence
- Additional protected species licences or specialisms are also highly valued
- Successful experience in applying for and managing European Protected Species Mitigation Licences
