About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Ecologist to lead and deliver a wide range of ecological projects, supported by the company Director, this is to work for an ambitious and growing company, with a very friendly team and good working environment. 

In this role, you will manage and mentor junior team members, conduct site surveys, produce technical reports, and contribute to exciting new areas like Biodiversity Net Gain. Additionally, you will provide technical input into fee quotes, bids, and tenders for public and private sector contracts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage projects, including coordinating internal consultants and external subcontractors to deliver high-quality outputs.
  • Support clients through all stages of their projects.
  • Undertake ecological surveys and ensure quality control/quality assurance of technical outputs such as reports.
  • Liaise and negotiate with statutory agencies, Local Planning Authorities, and other stakeholders.
  • Produce a wide range of technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments.
  • Provide technical input into fee quotes, bids, and tenders for both public and private sector contracts.
  • Support and mentor junior team members.
  • Collaborate with the company Director to enhance our ecological service offerings.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A relevant degree in Ecology or a related field.
  • A minimum of 8 years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of ecology, legislation, and best practice guidelines in England.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g., CIEEM) or willingness to apply.
  • Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain and Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) is desirable, with an eagerness to develop these skills.
  • Ability to independently undertake UKHab Surveys and/or hold protected species licenses.
  • Interest in project management, client liaison, tendering, and business development activities.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
